1.3.14. RS-485:
A communication bus used by the Genesys™ power supply for a multi-drop
system. One LAN supply controls a string of supplies that do
not
have the LAN option.
This bus uses a 4-wire twisted pair cable through the J3-IN and J3-OUT connectors
1.3.15. SCPI:
The ”Standard Commands for Programmable Instrument” is a structure of text-
based commands. For example, for any SCPI compliant instrument that has a volt
meter, it will return a voltage measurement with the “MEAS:VOLT?” query
1.3.16. Subnet Mask:
A number that divides an IP address into two sections; one for the
network identifier and one for the LAN instrument on the network
1.3.17. VISA:
The “Virtual Instrument Software Architecture” is a single interface library for
controlling instruments over many types of communication busses. In an automation
program, a “resource descriptor” string is given for each instrument. The descriptor
defines the instrument including it’s address and bus type
1.4. REQUIRED ACCESSORIES
1.4.1. LAN
Cable
The LAN cable must be supplied by the customer. It may be a standard straight “patch”
CAT-5 (or better) network cable or it may be a “crossover” cable where the pins are
reversed on one end. The cable type is auto-detected by the power supply
The serial link cable (0.5 m long) provided with the Genesys™ power
supply
cannot be used
for a LAN connection
1.4.2. Web Browser with Java Runtime Engine
To operate the web pages from a web browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or
Netscape Navigator, the Java runtime engine must be installed on your computer. The
engine may be downloaded from:
www.java.com
Java is a trademark of Sun Microsystems
1.4.3. NetBIOS for Hostnames
If, instead of the IP address, you want to use the power supply’s hostname to open a
network connection, your computer must be running the NetBIOS naming protocol
1.4.4. VISA Drivers for Programs
If you are writing custom test or automation programs for the Genesys™ LAN power supply,
the programs must operate using the VXI-11 with RPC protocols. This is most easily done
by using VISA drivers. These drivers allow you to easily send SCPI commands in many
programming languages and in several operating systems
VISA drivers are available from many instrumentation companies. The drivers are usually
included with their hardware or software products, or they may be purchased separately
