Low-Temperature Testing
Loading the Sample
The following is the procedure for applying thermal heat sink compound and loading it into the instrument:
NOTE
: Thermal heat sink compound is difficult to remove from clothing and skin, so take care when
handling the compound. Plastic gloves may be worn during application.
NOTE
: The stack
MOVE/FREE
switch may be used at any time to remove the downward pressure on the
sample, ie. to move or rotate the sample after the upper stack has been lowered. Place the toggle switch in
the
FREE
position to remove the load. Always keep the switch in the
MOVE
position while testing.
1
Turn the instrument on by pressing the main power switch on the rear panel. Check that coolant is flowing
through the heat sink.
2
Check that the air pressure reading on the gauge is 30–50 psi. If necessary, adjust the air pressure.
3
Accurately measure and record the thickness of the sample that will be tested.
4
Thoroughly clean the sample faces, top sample plate, and bottom sample plate using isopropyl alcohol
and lint-free wipes.
5
Apply a small volume of thermal compound (approximately .25” diameter and .25” high) to the center
on each face of the sample.
6
Make sure the
SPEED/INCREASE
switch is in the off position. Then put the sample onto the bottom
stack and lower the top stack slowly using the
SPEED/INCREASE
switch until the stacks press against
the sample.
7
Assure that the sample is in line with the top and bottom sample plates and continue to increase the
pressure using the
SPEED/INCREASE
switch until thermal compound no longer squeezes out from
the side of the sample.
8
Wipe away any excess compound from around the sample.
9
Lower the guard furnace, latch it in place with the spring loaded retaining pin, and begin testing.
WARNING: Keep fingers away from the test section when lowering the upper
stack with the pneumatic controls. Serious personal injury may occur if fingers
are accidentally pinched between the upper and lower stack parts.
