1.1 Heater description
Stiebel Eltron storage heaters store heat using
the lower-cost off-peak electricity tariffs. This
stored heat is then emitted during the day in
the form of convected warm air and radiated
heat.
1.2 Operation
The charging and discharging of the storage
heater is determined by using the control kn-
obs which are on the front of the heater (not
applicable to ETC 85 M).
The control of the charging and discharging
of the ETC 85 M is preset at the factory and
cannot be adjusted.
To turn off the heater completely from the
mains electricity supply, e.g. during the Sum-
mer period, an external isolating switch, sited
in close proximity to the heater, must be used.
1.2.1 Charging
(not applicable to ETC 85 M)
The amount of heat stored (charging) is de-
termined by using the input charge control
knob (

).
These charging instructions should be follo-
wed after the ‘first charge’ procedure (See
section 2.6.2) has been completed.
Setting the input charge control knob
for the ETC.M range
Initial setting of the input charge control knob
should be undertaken in accordance with the
following ‘rules of thumb’:
1-2
= transition seasons (spring/autumn)
3-4
= mild winter days
5-6
= cold winter days – this corresponds to
full charge level
If, after the first day, the charge level is too
high or too low, you should make small adjust-
ments to the input charge control (

) and
then leave it for another night. After getting
used to the unit for a short period you will
gain the necessary experience to ensure that
you select the correct setting.
Setting the input charge control knob
for the ETC.A range
The ETC.A range of heaters are fitted with an
input charge control that varies the amount
of charge taken, dependant on weather con-
ditions and the amount of any residual energy
already stored in the heater.
The setting of the optimum position for this
control knob may take a few days of experi-
mentation, but once set, it should not have to
be adjusted again.
After initial installation the input charge con-
trol knob should be set at position 4. If your
room is too warm the following evening,
reduce the setting to number 3 or if it is too
cold increase it to position 5. On subsequent
evenings adjust the knob by half a number at a
time until your comfort level is achieved.
A smell can be given of during the
first charge period, therefore care
should be taken to adequately ventilate the
room, e.g. open a window.
Children or people with breathing difficul
-
ties should not remain in the vicinity of the
unit during the first 48 hours of the initial
charging period.
1.2.2 Discharging
(Not applicable to ETC 85 M)
The stored heat is emitted via the unit’s sur-
face and via the air outlet grille at the top of
the heater.
If the storage temperature is low, e.g. later
in the day, the heat output can be increased
by opening the air flap (

) with the control
knob (

).
At higher storage temperatures the air outlet
flap remains closed regardless to the position
of the discharge control knob, due to safety
reasons.
If the building is to be empty for several days,
it is recommended that both control knobs
(
10, 11
) are set at position „1“.
In summer the heater can be isolated from
the mains electricity supply by means of the
external isolating switch.
1.3 Safety instructions
The heater must not be
– operated in rooms which are subject to a
fire or explosion risk on account of che
-
micals, dust, gases or vapours;
– operated in the immediate vicinity of
conduits or receptacles which convey or
contain flammable materials or materials
which are subject to an explosion risk;
– operated if the minimum distances from
neighbouring object surfaces are fallen
short of.

The heater must not under any circum-
stances be operated if work such as the lay-
ing, sanding, sealing, cleaning with solvents or
maintenance of floors, e.g. spraying or floor
waxing etc, is being carried out in the room.
The room must be adequately ventilated
after this work has been carried out and
prior to charging.
•
The warm air must be allowed to flow freely
from the heater grille! No objects, e.g. furni-
ture, drapes, curtains and textiles, whether
flammable or non-flammable, should be sited
within the specified minimum distances from
the storage heater and air outlet grille that are
mentioned in Fig
A
on page 2 and below;
– 500 mm from the air outlet grille, in all
directions
– 150 mm from the heater for textiles of
all types, (do not expose directly to the
warm air flow)
– 75 mm from any adjacent wall
– 250 mm below any window sill or other
projection, e.g. a shelf
– 200 mm between two storage heaters

During operation the surface of the heater
and the outcoming air will be hot ( more
than 80°C).
Danger of burning !
•
If it is intended that children or persons with
restricted physical, sensory, or mental capac-
ity should operate the appliance, it must be
ensured that this is only done after appropri-
ate instruction has been provided by the
person responsible for their safety.
Children should be supervised to ensure
that they do not play with the device.
•
No flammable, combustible, or heat
insulating objects or materials, e.g. washing,
blankets, magazines, containers of floor wax
or solvents, spray cans or similar, must be
placed on the storage heater or in its
immediate vicinity. Items of clothing or
washing should never be hung over the
storage heater to dry.
There is a Danger
of them catching fire!
Do not cover the device!
•
The free flow of air into the inlet openings
in the lower area of the heater (at the back
and front, to the right and left) must not be
impeded or blocked by anything.
•
No living things, e.g. animals or pets, should
be placed on or in close proximity to the
heater.
1.4 Care
If slight discolouration appears on the air out-
let grille or the heater casing, this should be
wiped off with a damp cloth as soon as pos-
sible. The unit should be cleaned and cared for
when cold, using conventional cleaning agents.
Avoid abrasive and caustic cleaning agents. Do
not spray anything into the unit or onto the
air outlet grille.
1.4.1 Maintenance
(by a competent person)
The heater only requires minimal maintenance.
It is however recommended that the storage
heater is inspected and cleaned by a competent
person prior to each heating season.
