Final Assembly Continued
68.
Fit the “dove tailed”
tops
of the cabane struts to the corresponding “dove tailed” slots in the
ribs W2. Refer to the Cabane Strut Detail on the plan to verify the
tops
of the struts. Lean
the struts against the jig, resting the “V” of the struts in the recesses within the sides of the
jig. Ensure that the jig is seated properly and that the struts look symmetrical as viewed
from the
front
. Now, bond the struts to the ribs W2 with medium CA. Cut the jig along the
dashed line and remove it from the center section assembly.
69.
Fit the cabane struts to the notches within the
top
fuselage sheeting with the strut bottoms
resting on top of the fuselage sides. Check the alignment of the center section and struts,
then tack glue the struts to the fuselage with small drops of medium CA.
70.
Open the covering over the slots in the
lower
wing panels to receive the inter-plane struts.
71.
Refer to the Inter-Plane Strut Detail on the plans to verify the
tops
and
bottoms
of the strut
assemblies (Tip: The tops are “dove tailed” while the bottoms are straight tabs). Fit the
tabbed
bottoms
of the struts into the slots in the
lower
wing panels. Ensure the struts rake
forward
as indicated on the plan. Generally square the struts to the wing panel and very
lightly tack glue with medium CA to retain.
72.
Lay one of the
upper
wing panels on the table with the
bottom
facing
up
. Invert the model
and lay it over the wing, aligning the struts over ribs W6. Fit the “dove tailed” inter-plane
strut tops within the corresponding “dove tailed” slots in ribs W6. Now fit the root of the
wing panel to ribs W3. Beginning at the trailing edge and working forward, lightly tack glue
the
upper
wing to the
center
section. Finally, bond the struts to rib W6.
(Tip: Do not apply too much glue. You may need to break one of the bonds later to fine
tune the alignment of the wings. Repeat this process for the opposite upper wing panel.)
73.
Check the fit of the wing roots to the center section. Ensure there are no gaps. As the wing
panels and the center section are drawn together, the wings will twist slightly, ensuring the
proper washout angle at the wingtips.
74.
Check the alignment of the wings from the front, rear, and sides. Check that the wings are
perpendicular to the fuselage, with equal amount of dihedral and washout on each side.
Gently twist the wing assembly if necessary to bring it into alignment. When you are
satisfied with the alignment of the wings, more permanently bond the assembly together at
the wing strut joints, the wing roots, and the lower wing spar using medium CA glue.
75.
Fit the headrest over the center stringer on the fuselage, “hooking” the headrest over the
edge of former F3. Bond with small drops of medium CA.
