Control Panel Automatic Mode
This Chapter covers operating principles of the MJ-X
L
con-
trol program and describes the various functions per-
formed by the microprocessor. It contains the information
you may need when deciding between the various options
described in Chapter 4 (Setting Up the MJ-X
L
Control
Panel) and Chapter 5 (Reading and Interpreting MJ-X
L
Control Panel Data).

Summary of MJ-X
L
Control
Modes
The regulator control function has three operating modes:
local manual control, local automatic control, and remote
control. Manual control can only be performed locally.
Select the operating mode with the Remote/Auto/Manual
switch as shown in Figure 6.1.
Figure 6.1
Remote/Auto/Manual Switch (Shown in
Local-Auto position)
Manual mode (By-Pass Position)
Place the Remote/Auto/Manual Switch in the Manual posi-
tion to activate the Manual mode. In Manual mode, you
can use the Tap Raise/Lower switch (on the MJ-X
L
front
panel) to control the tap position directly. Status informa-
tion is available via the remote communications link, but
the remote operator cannot change settings or otherwise
operate the MJ-X
L
Control Panel.
Local Automatic mode
Place the Remote/Auto/Manual Switch in the Local-Auto
position to activate the Automatic mode. In Local Auto-
matic mode, the MJ-X
L
executes its normal tap control
algorithm. Status information is available via the remote
communications link, but the remote operator cannot
change settings or otherwise operate the MJ-X
L
Control
Panel
Remote Automatic mode
Place the Remote/Auto/Manual Switch in the Remote
(Enable) position to enable the Remote mode. In Remote
mode, the MJ-X
L
executes its normal (automatic) tap con-
trol algorithms, unless overridden remotely. In this mode,
status information is available via the remote communica-
tions link. In addition, the remote operator can change set-
tings and remotely operate the control program, and tap
motor signals can be directly controlled via terminal strip
connections (see Figure 2.3).
Table 6.1 summarizes control program operation for the
three control modes.
