Scanning Documents
Resolution
The Resolution setting permits you to customize scanning to fit
your intended purpose. Available resolution settings range from
75 dpi to 600 dpi. Click the arrow to access these settings.
Note that higher resolutions will result in larger files. Generally,
select your scanning resolution based on how you wish to use the
document:
Resolutions from 75-100 dpi will suffice if you intend to
scan the document and simply view it via your computer
monitor.
Resolutions of 200 dpi (monochrome images) or 100 dpi
(gray scale images) should be used if you intend to scan
and fax the document.
Select a resolution of 300 dpi if you intend to scan the
document and then perform an OCR (Optical Character
Recognition) operation.
If you intend to scan the document and then print copies, the
best resolution setting will depend on your printer’s resolu-
tion. Generally, scan your image at 1/3 the resolution you
are using to print.
Note: A resolution of 600 dpi will result in a much larger file and
take longer to process when using a slow computer. We recommend
a high speed processor and a large hard disk for scanning at 600 dpi.
Gamma Adjust
The Gamma Adjust setting permits you to adjust the luminance
of the scanned image. This setting enables you to compensate
for any difference in gamma levels between your computer
monitor and the original document. Essentially, this setting
allows you to match the luminance or brightness of the original
document with the file that results from the scanning procedure.
It is possible that when the scanned image appears on your
monitor, the displayed colors will be not be as bright as those in
the original document. The Gamma Adjust setting will help you
