5.4 Alarms
To avoid dangerous situations for the operator or to protect the unit life, it includes
some safety systems and some alarms:
(1) Alarm: «No water for steam generator»
• If the lamp (1) lights on sporadically : This means that water level control have
detected a low level of water on the steam generator and automatically starts the
water pump to get the suitable level of water.
• If the lamp (1) lights on permanently: This means that water level control
have detected a low level of water on the steam generator for a long time and it
automatically refills with water. This situation stops distillation. Probably the water
reservoir is empty
(2) Alarm: «Safety door open or tube not present»
This red lamp lights on when the safety door is open or if there is no sample tube
inserted on the unit.
This alarm inhibits the distillation and the NaOH adding.
(3) Alarm: «Overtemperature» on the steam generator
This red lamp lights on when an overtemperature on the steam generator has
switched the safety thermostat.
It inhibits all distiller functions. And cuts the power supply to the heating element.
Once it is switched, it must be left to get cool for some minutes. Solve the problem
that causes the switching and rearm the safety thermostat by pushing the central
button. The safety thermostat is located on the electrical box, right hand side cover
must be removed to get it.
The safety thermostat switching is due to low level of water on the steam genera
-
tor, probably because the water reservoir is empty or due to water pump malfunc
-
tion.
5.3 Distillation
On pushing the «STEAM» key the unit starts the sample distillation.
When an automatic addition of a NaOH volume has been set, it starts after a few
seconds.
Approximately after 30s the sample starts to boil and the steams are driven to the
cooler for its condensation. The distilled is collected on the Erlenmeyer.
Generally speaking it is accepted that once 150ml of distilled are collected distilla
-
tion will be finished.
(50ml of Boric + 150ml of distilled;
Total
: 200ml)
Push «STEAM» to stop the distillation.
Note
: Distillation stops automatically after 8 minutes (approx. 200ml of distilled).
But it is suggested not to leave the unit unattended.
Note
: By Keep pushed the key “STEAM” for 5 seconds, the distillation time is
modified from 8 to 6 minutes. (It must be selected again when the unit is discon
-
nected)
Manual addition
During distillation NaOH could be added on the sample. For it, just push the
«NaOH» key. A volume of around 25ml will be dispensed.
Note:
Wait until the dispensing is finished before to push «NaOH» for another
dispensing.

Alarm signals
To change the distillation time, keep
pressed the “STEAM” key during 5
seconds:
1 beep: time is 6 minutes.
2 beeps: time is 8 minutes.
