Hot parts on the device
The SURPRISE is made entirely of metal. Metals are very good
conductors of heat, which means almost all parts of the SURPRISE get
hot. The main body, pipes and cap must never be touched while a fire is
burning or even a few hours afterwards. During the first burn-up, the
glasses are still cool at the bottom edge, especially where the inner ring
protects them from radiant heat. As the fire burns on, these also become
hot and may not be touched.
The main body should never be touched as there is a high risk of burns.
The glasses get almost as hot in some places. If a fire burns for a long
time, they will also be completely hot. The glasses should therefore not
be touched either.
The rendering to the right shows the SURPRISE marked in different
colours to illustrate the heat of the separate components. The glass
panes are transparent, but, as previously mentioned, they become
almost as hot as the main body.
The heat scale starts with dark red for hot and ends with green for
warm. Over extended fires, the heat can spread everywhere through the
metal. As a result, it should always be assumed that none of the parts
are cold enough to be touched.
There is a risk of unintentionally touching hot parts when adding more
wood. Open the glass panes as far as possible, to allow enough space to
insert the piece of wood. Please take special note of the parts marked in
red in the illustration on the left: there is a high risk to touch these parts
unintentionally.
