Stirring Rod
Page 7-1
Section Seven: Installing the
Stirring Rod
Your J-2
r
is equipped with an internal stirring
rod that allows you to stir the molten metal
without opening the hood door and
compromising the inert gas atmosphere inside.
The stirring rod is rotated in an arc around
the sealing rod using the handle with the round
knob. The stirring rod is made of graphite and
requires periodic replacement. This is best done
when the machine is cool. Check the stirring
rod condition as part of your regular pre-casting
inspection each time you prepare to turn the
machine on.
If you must replace the stirring rod when the
machine is hot, use extra caution to avoid
getting burned or causing a fire.
•
Warning! Hot parts may not look hot. Parts
with temperatures of several hundred degrees
look the same as cool ones. The sealing rod
could be hot enough to start a fire. Severe burns
will result from touching a hot part.
• Think about where you will put down the
hood assembly before removing it.
• Never place a hot hood, sealing rod or
crucible assembly part where you or
someone else might accidentally bump
into it or pick it up.
Install the Stirring Rod
1. Unplug the thermocouple and remove it
from the tube.
Unplug the thermocouple.
2. Turn the hood counter-clockwise until
the hood lugs are clear.
3. Lift the hood carefully off the machine,
and lay it face up on a non-flammable
work surface.
Turn the hood counter-clockwise and lift it.
4. Open the hood door. Loosen the stirring
rod clamp with a 5mm Allen key.
