Chapter 8.
Using Red Hat Network with Red Hat Linux 6.2
Red Hat Linux 6.2 shipped with a program named Red Hat Update Agent (
up2date
). However, this
version of the
Red Hat Update Agent
can not be used to connect to Red Hat Network to receive
package updates. You need a new version of the
Red Hat Update Agent
and the
Red Hat Network
Registration Client
to use Red Hat Network on a Red Hat Linux 6.2 system.
To download and install these programs, use the following steps:
1. In a shell prompt, log in as root and execute the command
mkdir rhnpackages
to create a
new directory in which to download the packages.
2. In the same shell prompt, execute the command
cd rhnpackages
to change to the new direc-
tory.
3. Go to http://rhn.redhat.com/help/rh62.pxt and download the necessary packages.
4. Go back to the shell prompt in the
rhnpackages
directory (you must still be root) and execute
the command
rpm -Uvh *
to upgrade the existing
Red Hat Update Agent
to the version that
works with Red Hat Network. The
Red Hat Network Registration Client
will also be installed
with this command along with other packages your system needs to run the Red Hat Network
programs.
5. After they are installed, run the
Red Hat Network Registration Client
(
rhn_register
) to
register your system. See Chapter 2 for details.
6. Login to your account at http://rhn.redhat.com to configure your preferences and to configure
which systems you want to entitle.
