Please note:
It takes care, patience and precision to in-
stall a seat. For the sake of your own safety,
it is essential that the seat is installed and
electrically
connected
by
appropriately
trained specialists if you do not have the
necessary skills or tools to fit it yourself.
Before you start to install the seat, make
sure that you have parked your vehicle safe-
ly. It is also important for you to maintain a
firm footing throughout all the installation
operations.
Note
If you are installing a passenger seat, then
please only use a Recaro seat with seat-oc-
cupancy detection mat.
1. Before removal
First look for a suitable power connection if
your Recaro seat is equipped with electrical
adjustment facilities or a seat heater.
Look for a power connection in the fuse
box
•
Remove one pin from each side of the
glove compartment.
•
Completely detach the fuse box.
•
Refer to section 7 in the electrical installa-
tion instructions on how to proceed.
Attention
Your vehicle is fitted with belt tensioners.
The belt tensioner must be replaced by a
new one every time it is triggered.
The following precautions must be taken
before removing the standard seat
•
Disconnect the negative terminal on the
battery.
•
After disconnecting the battery, wait for
10 minutes before starting to remove the
seat so that the capacitors of the belt ten-
sioner's control unit have had time to dis-
charge.
These capacitors can cause the belt ten-
sioner to be triggered if the 10 minute waiting
period is not observed.
Removing the standard seat
2. Removing the standard seat
The standard seat is removed from the ve-
hicle completelly with seat rails and sub-sec-
tion.
•
Cover the sill.
•
Move the seat into the frontmost and
highest position.
•
Remove the belt, undo the SW16 screw
at the belt shackle to do this.
•
Undo both SW16 hexagon screws from
the sub-section.
•
Move the seat in the rearmost position.
•
Remove the covering caps from both
hexagon nuts and undo both SW16 nuts.
Undoing the connector plug:
•
Lift the seat up at the front.
•
Undo the plug connection between the
seat and the vehicle by pulling the black
side section of the yellow centre connec-
tor to the tunnel side.
•
Take the plug off.
•
Lift the seat out of the vehicle in one pie-
ce.
Please keep all screws, nuts and covering
caps in a safe place as these will be needed
again for installation of the Recaro seat.
3. Removing the standard seat
Disconnecting the centre plug
•
Loosen the centre plug from the seat by
pressing the lugs on the centre plug to-
gether.
•
Take the plug off.
Dismantling the belt tensioner
•
Undo the seat belt screw Torx T50, and
remove the belt tensioner.
Take out the SBE electronics (passenger
seat only)
The SBE electronics are in a black plastic
box with two connector plugs mounted to the
underside of the seat.
•
Remove the SBE electronics by turning
the box and then pulling out through the
plate on the seat.
Please keep the SBE electronics, belt ten-
sioner with centre plug and seat belt screw in
a safe place as these will be needed again
for installation of the Recaro seat.
Installing the Recaro seat
Observe the following torque values when
installing your Recaro seat:
M6 screws
10 +3/–2 Nm
M8 screws
22 +3/–2 Nm
M10 screws

5 Nm
7/16" screws
40
±
5 Nm
Note
Only use the screws supplied with the con-
sole for installing the seat.
When installing a supplementary adapter,
use the screws supplied with the supple-
mentary adapter for installing the seat.
Attention
The micro-encapsulated screws supplied
with the console may only be used once.
Note
Make sure you check the marks on consoles
and adapters when you are installing the
seat.
2 arrows
The arrows must be pointing forwards in the
direction in which the vehicle is travelling
and towards the outside edge of the seat.
1 arrow
The arrow must be pointing in the direction in
which the vehicle is travelling.
4. Installing the belt tensioner
(Figure A)
Attention:
BMW E46: use standard belt hol-
der included in the installation-kit.
BMW X5: use the additional belt holder

•
Attach the belt tensioner (1) to the belt
holder.
•
Secure the belt tensioner (1) to the belt
holder (3) using the original screw (2).
5. Installing seat rails and conso-
les (Figures B, C and D)
Supplementary adapters
For seats of the type I (without height adjust-
ment), the sitting position in the Recaro seat
corresponds to the lowest sitting position in
the standard seat. You can mount one of the
optionally available supplementary adapters
(4) between console and adapter should you
desire a higher sitting position:
Part no. 373864:
20 mm high
Part no. 373865:
40 mm high
When installing a supplementary adapter:
•
Use the 6 screws M8x35 or M8x55 sup-
plied for mounting the seat instead of
using the screws provided with the con-
sole.
•
Press the plastic stoppers (5) into the
front face of the supplementary adapter
until flush.
