3.1.5. Routing
Static routing is the term used to refer to a manual method that is used to set up routing between net-
works. Static routing has the advantage of being predictable and simple to set up.
This section lists the routing table and lets the user add and delete routes.
Description
Parameter
To enter network route select “Net”.
To enter a route to a host select “Host”.
Select
The destination network or host. You can provide IP addresses in dotted decimal or
host/network names.
Destination
The network's IP address together with its address mask defines a range of IP ad-
dresses. For IP subnets, the address mask is referred to as the subnet mask. For
host routes, the mask is "all ones" (in dotted decimal 255.255.255.255).
Mask
Next hop (gateway); the next router which knows how to reach the destination
Gateway
Identity of network interface through which a packet will be sent to reach the gateway.
Interface
The 'distance' to the target (usually counted in hops). It is not used by recent kernels,
but may be needed by routing daemons.
