ELECTRICAL AND IGNITION SYSTEM
Battery Maintenance
Keep battery terminals and connections free of corrosion. If
cleaning is necessary, remove the corrosion with a stiff wire
brush. Wash with a solution of one tablespoon baking soda and
one cup water. Rinse well with tap water and dry off with clean
shop towels. Coat the terminals with dielectric grease or
petroleum jelly.
NOTE: Batteries must be fully charged before use or
battery life will be reduced by 10-30% of full
potential. Charge battery according to “Charging
Procedure” provided in Chapter 10. Do not use the
vehicle’s stator/alternator to charge a new battery.
Battery Removal
1.
Remove the driver’s seat to access the battery.
2.
Disconnect the black (negative) battery cable.
3.
Disconnect the red (positive) battery cable.
4.
Remove the hold-down strap and lift the battery out of the
vehicle.
Battery Installation
IMPORTANT: Using a new battery that has not been
fully charged can damage the battery and result in a
shorter life. It can also hinder vehicle performance.
Follow the battery charging procedure in Chapter 10
“Electrical” before installing the battery.
1.
Ensure the battery is fully charged.
2.
Place the battery in the battery holder and secure with hold-
down strap.
3.
