5. What To Do In Case Of Breakdowns?

Pump doesn't start
• Power supply interrupted
• Check fuse in the electronic drive unit
• Check plug contacts on the pump and
the electronic drive unit
• Check feeder lines
• Lubricant pump dirty
• Clean lubricant pump as per 7.2.
Pump doesn't attain
• Fore-vacuum pressure too high
• Check backing pump function
rated rotation speed;
• Leak or too much gas
• Check seals
Pump cuts out during operations
• Seek leak and repair
• Rotor sluggish owing
• Check bearing (noisy ?): request replacement
to defective bearing
by PFEIFFER
• Run-up phase in the Electronic
• Extend run-up phase setting time
Drive Unit TCP too short
• Thermal overloading caused by:
– Insufficient water flow
• Ensure free flow
– Insufficient air supply
• Ensure adequate air supply
– Fore-vacuum pressure too high
• Reduce fore-vacuum pressure
– Ambient temperature too high
• Reduce ambient temperature
• Lubricant dirty
• Clean lubricant pump as per 7.2.
• Lubricant deficiency
• Check lubricant and replace as necessary.
Pump doesn't attain
• Pump dirty
• Bake out pump
final pressure
• If seriously contaminated: request
cleaning by PFEIFFER Service
• Leak in vacuum chamber,
• Seek leak starting with vacuum chamber
lines or pump
• Repair leak
Unusual operating noises
• Bearing damaged
• Inform Balzers-Pfeiffer Service
of need for repair
• Rotor damaged
• Inform PFEIFFER Service

• Splinter shield
• Check splinter shield: Press clamping
(if fitted) not seated firmly
