5.14 Connection to a mobile network
Once you have
inserted the SIM card, open “Alarms/GSM” from the main menu and then select
“GSM/SMS”.
When you use the card for the first time, you will be asked to enter the PIN. If the card has been locked
(e. g. after entering the wrong PIN three times), you will additionally need to enter the PUK number
(Personal Unblocking Key)
Note: The PCE-VM 40B deactivates the password request after the first registration, so that the password
does not need to be entered again.
Now the PCE-VM 40B will try to connect to the mobile phone network. This takes a few seconds. If the
registration is successful, the name of the network provider will appear on the display.
The antenna symbol and the reception quality display with five levels in the upper right corner of the
display indicate that a connection has been established. If the reception quality is too low, a question
mark appears next to the antenna symbol.
The following figure shows the GSM settings menu:
Note: GSM devices regularly establish connections to the nearest transmission mast at high transmission
power. This is called Periodic Location Update. The length of the intervals may vary, depending on the
network, between 6 minutes (rarely) and some hours. These high-performance transmission pulses are
also known from occasional interference in audio equipment. Such interference may also occur in the
sensitive PCE-VM 40B measuring channel and result in display values of 1 or 2 mm/s. This should be
considered when monitoring very low magnitudes with the PCE-VM 40B.
