CAUTION: Operating the engine with an engine
brake that will not deactivate will cause severe
engine damage. Inoperable engine brakes can
cause an additional strain on the engine valve
train causing severe internal engine damage. Do
not operate the engine if the engine brake will
not deactivate.
If the engine brakes will not shut off, shut off the engine
immediately, and contact a PACCAR Authorized Repair
Location.
Tips for Operation on Level and Dry
Pavement
WARNING! Do not use the engine brake when
operating on road surfaces with poor traction
(such as wet, icy, or snow covered roads or
gravel). Retarders can cause the wheels to skid
on a slippery surface. You could lose control of
the vehicle and/or jackknife if the wheels begin
to skid, resulting in an accident.
WARNING! Do not use an engine brake when
driving bobtail or with an unloaded trailer. There
may not be enough weight on the rear axle to
provide traction. This could cause a lose of con-
trol and jackknife resulting in an injury accident.
Make sure the engine brake is switched OFF
when bobtailing or with an unloaded trailer.
