5.6.3 COS/802.1p
COS (Class of Service), also known as 802.1p, is a parameter for differentiating the types of
payloads contained in the packet to be transmitted. CoS operates only on 802.1Q VLAN
Ethernet at Layer 2, while other QoS mechanisms operate at the Layer 3or use a local QoS
tagging system that does not modify the actual packet. COS supports up to 7 priorities and 4
priority queues: High, Middle, Low, and Lowest. When an ingress packet has no VLAN tag, the
default priority value will be used.
