6. Ambiguous filenames.
You will see that some instructions include (ambiguous filename). This
means that as well as specifying one filename, you can specify a number
of filenames. The way in which you specify an ambiguous filename is by
using
wildcard
characters, of which there are two (* and ?) * specifies
any number of letters and/or digits in any combination and ? specifies
any number or letter. The only requirement is that you must specify no
characters after the * in the name part or the extension. Below are some
correct and incorrect examples of the use of
wildcard
characters:
Correct
P*.JO? This looks at all files and any with P at the beginning of the
name and JO at the beginning of the extension will be selected.
J ? B ? . B ? Only filenames with four name characters and two extension
characters will be looked at (? specifies only one character). A n y
filenames with J and B as the first and third name characters and B as
the first extension character will be selected.
Incorrect
"P*J2.NO?" There are characters after the * in the name part.
" P R O G 1 ? . * B There is a character after * in the extension part.
