Glossary
Binning
In binning mode, the camera's CCD sensor combines neighboring pixels into pixel
blocks. This results in a higher sensitivity and a shorter processing time but also in
a lower resolution. Double binning (2x) reduces the number of pixels to a quarter,
while quadruple binning (4x) reduces the number of pixels to a sixteenth.

into the light microscope camera as a CCD chip.
C-Mount
The C-mount is a standardized thread for connecting cameras. With this screw
thread, the light microscope camera can be firmly attached to all common
microscopes.

FireWire
FireWire is a hardware standard used to connect devices with a high data transmis-
sion rate. It is used especially with cameras and in the multimedia domain. The
FireWire connection makes a high data transmission rate possible and supplies the
peripheral device with power via the FireWire cable. The Olympus Soft Imaging
Solutions cameras work via the Standard IEEE 1394a (= FireWire 400).
Device Manager
The Device Manager is a part of the PC's control panel, in which the connected
devices and their drivers are managed. All the available FireWire interfaces and also
the connected cameras are listed here.
Hardware
The PC itself and all physical components that are connected to it, for example the
monitor, cables and printers, are hardware. Thus, a
hardware defect
is a physical
problem, for example, a defective device or a defective plug or socket.
