Using the ping Command to Test Network Links
The superuser CLI ping command tests and measures the LAN. Also, it
can isolate a single-point hardware or software failure.
The ping command sends out an Internet Control Message Protocol
(ICMP) echo request packet each second, or until input from the terminal
terminates the command.
After completing, ping displays a summary of all echo replies received.
This display includes a calculation of the time, in milliseconds, that it
takes to return the message (if the number of data bytes is 8 or greater).

ping [–artv] host [databytes [count]]

In superuser mode, the ping command is continuous until
stopped by the superuser.

Description
–a
Generates AppleTalk Echo Protocol (AEP) echo request
packets to a target node.
–r
Bypasses the normal routing tables and sends the message
directly to a host on an attached network. An error returns if the
host is not on a directly attached network.
