Disassembly and Reassembly
Installing DIMMs
1.
Observe the safety and ESD precautions listed at the beginning of this
chapter.
2.
Power off the system. Ensure the power cords are unplugged from the AC
wall outlet.
3.
Remove the processor cover. See
Removing the Processor Cover
earlier in
this chapter.
4.
The memory board is secured to the chassis by two thumbscrews (one on
each front corner of the board.) Loosen the thumbscrews and slowly pull
memory out of its bay until its edge connectors are free. See Figure 4-17.
Figure 4-17. Removing the Memory Board
Note:
Observe static precautions. Use an antistatic
wrist strap. Hold DIMMs only by their edges.
5.
Place the memory board on an antistatic surface.
6.
Holding the DIMM module only by the edges, remove it from its antistatic
package.
Note:
When installing DIMMs in empty DIMM
connectors on the memory board, you must remove the
DIMM connector cover first.
7.
DIMMs are keyed so they can only be inserted one way. Position the DIMM
over the socket on the board where you want to install the DIMM. The
notches in the bottom edge of the DIMM mate with the raised bumps in the
DIMM socket.
8.
Press down evenly on the DIMM until it seats correctly. The retaining levers
(see Figure 4-18) on the sockets are not "tools" to aid in the insertion, only
to keep the DIMMs in place and to aid in extraction. The levers will
automatically close in place once the DIMM is fully inserted into the socket.
