Upgrading Your System 4-19
Figure 4-18. Installing an Option Board
8.
Align the rounded notch in the retaining bracket with the threaded hole in
the expansion slot frame. The retaining bracket fits into the space that was
occupied by the expansion slot cover.
9.
Reinstall the screw in the threaded hole. Be sure to push the bracket slot up
against the screw before you tighten it. If this is not done, the bracket may
interfere with an adjacent bracket.
10.
Connect any external cables (if they are needed) to the installed option
board.
11.
Replace the left side panel.
12.
Plug in the system power cord, and power on the system.
Removing an Option Board
Note:
Expansion slot covers must be installed on all
vacant slots to maintain the electromagnetic emissions
characteristics of the system and to assure proper cooling of
the system components.
1.
Power off the system and ensure it is disconnected from the AC power
source.
2.
Remove the left side panel as described earlier in this chapter.
3.
Disconnect any cables attached to the option board you are removing.
4.
Remove and save the option board retaining bracket screw.
5.
Hold the board at each end and carefully rock it back and forth until the edge
connectors pull free. Make sure that you do not scrape the board against
other components.
6.
Remove the board from the expansion slot and place it in an antistatic
wrapper. If you are replacing a board, go to "Installing an Option Board"
earlier in this chapter, otherwise continue.
