In many cases, you will want to change the default characteristics of the
serial port on the Macintosh. For instance, you may want to run at a higher
baud rate and you may want to send 8-bit data bytes for binary data that
will be sent to the GPIB device. To change the default characteristics to
19.2K baud and 8-bit data from within Microsoft BASIC, place the
following BASIC statement at the beginning of your program:
OPEN "COM1:19200,,8," AS #1
then set the switches on the GPIB-232CT as shown in Figure G-2.

As another example, if your computer is an Apple IIc, the default
characteristics are as follows:
• baud
rate:
9600
• parity: none
• data
bits:
8
• stop
bits:
1
If these default characteristics meet your needs, set the switches on the
GPIB-232CT as shown in Figure G-3.
