How the Speaker Equalizer Does its Job
The Speaker Equalizer consists of two parts:
1. The Speaker Equalizer Module (MVP-SE)
which is installed in the MVP frame; and
2. The Audio MVP Control Module (MVP-ACM)
which is installed in the low-level
audio path prior to amplification.
NOTE:
A Speaker Equalizer requires an MVP Sound Pressure Meter to function.
Speaker equalization is achieved by selectively lowering the audio level to each Speaker pair in a Speaker
Chain to match the audio reproduction level of the most inefficient Speaker in the Chain, thus making the
volume level delivered by all Speakers in a Chain sound relatively the same. This is performed by placing an
electronically controllable attenuation device, the Audio MVP Control Module (MVP-ACM) in the low level
audio path, prior to final amplification for the Speakers. The ACM is controlled by the MVP-panel-mounted
SE Module.
During calibration, the SE uses the sound level information from the MVP Sound Pressure Meter to compare
the level of received sound against the pre-set reference (calibration) level. (The sound level information
from one SP can be used by all Speaker Equalizers in the MVP System for setting attenuation levels for
selected Speaker pairs.) The SE then determines whether the received sound level is equal to or greater than
the reference level. The SE causes the ACM to store an attenuation value for each Speaker in the Chain
being calibrated.
When the Speaker Equalizer is activated during a demonstration, it operates automatically. When a Speaker
in a calibrated Chain is selected, the ACM lowers the volume of the selected Speaker according to the value
it has stored for that Speaker. The SE can be turned off at any time, and when it is off, does not affect the
System at all.
The Speaker Equalizer will equalize one Speaker Chain (up to 99 Speakers pairs) in an MVP installation. Any
number of MVP Speaker Equalizers require only one MVP Sound Pressure Meter to operate. The SE may not
be appropriate for specialized Speakers, like Tweeters and Subwoofers.
Calibrating Speakers with the Speaker Equalizer
At the time of installation, Speakers are calibrated using the Speaker Equalizer after all components have
been installed. This calibration, which is simple and mostly automatic, stores an attenuation value in the
Audio MVP Control Module for each Speaker pair in the Chain being equalized. When individual Speakers in
a display are replaced, the Audio MVP Control Module can be re-calibrated just for that Speaker’s
attenuation value. See the Operation Section, page 119 for information on the calibration process, and
more suggestions for use.
