2�3 IM/IME Description
The LSI Logc Integrated Mrrorng (IM) feature supports one or two mrrored volumes
on each LSI Logc SAS controller (or one mrrored volume and one Integrated Strpng
volume). Typcally, one of these volumes s the boot volume, as shown n Fgure 2.1.
This is accomplished through the firmware of the LSI Logic SAS controller that supports
the standard Fuson-MPT nterface. The runtme mrrorng of the boot dsk s transparent
to the BIOS, drvers, and operatng system.
Host-based status software montors the state of the mrrored dsks and reports any
error conditions. In Figure 2.1 the system is configured with a second disk as a mirror
of the first (primary) disk.
The advantage of Integrated Mrrorng (RAID 1), s that there s always a mrrored copy
of the data. The dsadvantage s that wrtes take longer because data must be wrtten
twce. On the other hand, performance s actually mproved durng reads.
Figure 2.2 shows the logical view and physical view of an Integrated Mirroring configu -
raton wth two dsks n the mrrored volume.
