supportthecombustionairrequirementsofthe
heaterbeingused.
•Refertothespecificationsectionoftheheater’s
manual,heaterdataplate,orcontactthefactory
todeterminecombustionairventilation
requirementsoftheheater.
•Lackofproperventilationairwillleadto
impropercombustion.
•Impropercombustioncanleadtocarbon
monoxidepoisoningleadingtoseriousinjuryor
death.Symptomofcarbonmonoxidepoisoning
canincludeheadaches,dizzinessanddifficulty
inbreathing.
FUEL GAS ODOR
LP gas and natural gas have man‑made odorants added
specifically for detection of fuel gas leaks.
If a gas leak occurs you should be able to smell the fuel
gas. Since Propane (LP) is heavier than air you should
smell for the gas odor low to the floor. ANY GAS ODOR
IS YOUR SIGNAL TO GO INTO IMMEDIATE ACTION!
•Donottakeanyactionthatcouldignitethefuelgas.Do
notoperateanyelectricalswitches.Donotdisconnect
anypowersupplyorextensioncords.Donotlight
matchesoranyothersourceofflame.Donotuseyour
telephone.
•Geteveryoneoutofthebuildingandawayfromthearea
immediately.
•Closeallpropane(LP)gastankorcylinderfuelsupply
valves,orthemainfuelsupplyvalvelocatedatthemeter
ifyouusenaturalgas.
•Propane(LP)gasisheavierthanairandmaysettleinlow
areas.Whenyouhavereasontosuspectapropaneleak,
keepoutofalllowareas.
•Useyourneighbor’sphoneandcallyourfuelgassupplier
andyourfiredepartment.Donotre-enterthebuildingor
area.
•Stayoutofthebuildingandawayfromtheareauntil
declaredsafebythefirefightersandyourfuelgas
supplier.
•FINALLY,letthefuelgasservicepersonandthe
firefighterscheckforescapedgas.Havethemairout
thebuildingandareabeforeyoureturn.Properlytrained
servicepeoplemustrepairanyleaks,checkforfurther
leakages,andthenrelighttheapplianceforyou.
ODOR FADING ‑ NO ODOR DETECTED
•Somepeoplecannotsmellwell.Somepeoplecannot
smelltheodoroftheman-madechemicaladdedto
propane(LP)ornaturalgas.Youmustdetermineifyou
cansmelltheodorantinthesefuelgases.
•Learntorecognizetheodorofpropane(LP)gasand
naturalgas.Localpropane(LP)gasdealerswillbemore
thanhappytogiveyouascratchandsniffpamphlet.Use
ittobecomefamiliarwiththefuelgasodor.
•Smokingcandecreaseyourabilitytosmell.Being
aroundanodorforaperiodoftimecanaffectyour
sensitivitytothatparticularodor.Odorspresentinanimal
confinementbuildingscanmaskfuelgasodor.
•
The odorant in propane (LP) gas and natural gas
is colorless and the intensity of its odor can fade
under some circumstances.
•Ifthereisanundergroundleak,themovementofgas
throughthesoilcanfiltertheodorant.
•Propane(LP)gasodormaydifferinintensityatdifferent
levels.SincePropane(LP)gasisheavierthanair,there
maybemoreodoratlowerlevels.
• Always be sensitive to the slightest gas odor.
Ifyou
continuetodetectanygasodor,nomatterhowsmall,
treatitasaseriousleak.Immediatelygointoactionas
discussedpreviously.
ATTENTION ‑ CRITICAL POINTS TO
REMEMBER!
•Propane(LP)gashasadistinctiveodor.Learnto
recognizetheseodors.(ReferenceFuelGasOdorand
OdorFadingsectionsabove.
•EvenIfyouarenotpropertytrainedintheserviceand
repairoftheheater,ALWAYSbeconsciouslyawareofthe
odorsofpropane(LP)gasandnaturalgas.
•Ifyouhavenotbeenproperlytrainedinrepairand
serviceofpropane(LP)gasthendonotattemptto
lightheater,performserviceorrepairs,ormakeany
adjustmentstotheheateronthepropane(LP)gasfuel
system.
•Aperiodicsnifftestaroundtheheaterorattheheater’s
joints;i.e.hose,connections,etc.,isagoodsafety
practiceunderanyconditions.Ifyousmellevenasmall
amountofgas,CONTACTYOURFUELGASSUPPLIER
IMMEDIATELY.DONOTWAIT!
