-- CAUTION --
The terms “detergent”, “additive”, and “com-
pounded” used in this manual are intended to
refer to a class of aviation engine lubricating oils
to which certain substances have been added to
improve them for aircraft use. These terms do
not refer to such materials commonly known as
“top cylinder lubricant”, “dopes” and “carbon
remover” which are sometimes added to fuel or
oil. These products may damage the engine and
therefore, should not be used. Under no circum-
stances should automotive oil be used, since
such oils could cause engine damage.
During the engine break--in period, Nondispersant min-
eral oil conforming to SAE 51 966 shall be used. How-
ever, if the engine is flown less than once a week, a
straight mineral oil with corrosion preventative
MIL--C--6529 for the first 25 hours is recommended.
After the first 25 hours of the airplane’s time in service,
the oil and oil filter must be changed and a new supply
of Teledyne Continental Motors specification MHS--24
(latest revision) ashless dispersant oil must be used. At
50 hours of time in service, the oil and oil filter shall be
changed. Discard the old filter and replace with new.
Check discarded oil for evidence of metal particles.
Thereafter, the oil and oil filter must be changed at ev-
ery 50 hours of time in service. Use TCM filter or ap-
proved equivalent (Champion # 48109).
At the first oil change, the engine and related accesso-
ries including the magnetos, starter, alternator, engine
driven fuel and oil pumps, oil cooler, and propeller gov-
ernor, should be inspected for oil leaks and security.
When changing from mineral oil to additive oil, filter
should be changed regardless of the operation time.
Check screens and filters for sludge or plugging every
10 hours after switching from mineral oil to ashless dis-
persant (additive) oil or until no sludge or plugging is
found.
12--10--04 -- OXYGEN SYSTEM
AVOX/SCOTT SYSTEM (OPTIONAL)
The oxygen cylinders, when fully charged, contain
approximately 77 cubic feet or 115.7 cubic feet of avia-
tors breathing oxygen (Specifications No.
MIL--O--27210). Recharging of this oxygen cylinder
should be accomplished by using the appropriate Scott
recharging fittings to the pressure shown on (Figure
12--1), Pressure vs. Temperature Table.

Oil, grease or other lubricants in contact with
oxygen create a serious fire hazard; such contact
must be avoided when handling oxygen equip-
ment.

NOTE:
The oxygen cylinder should not be run down to
less than 100 P.S.I. Below this pressure, atmo-
spheric contamination of the cylinder may occur,
requiring valve removal, cylinder cleaning and
inspection at an FAA approved repair station.
NOTE:
Refer to Section 35--00--00 for periodic bottle
pressure check.
Any time fittings are disconnected on the oxygen sys-
tem, the threads should be treated with Tetrafluoroe-
thylene tape (MIL--T--17720). Prior to reconnection, the
system should be checked for leaks with leak testing
compound (MIL--L--25567). If no leaks are found, wipe
system clean and dry.
12--10--05 -- OXYGEN SYSTEM
PRECISE FLIGHT SYSTEM (OPTIONAL)
The oxygen cylinder, when fully charged, contain
approximately 77 cubic feet (or Optional 115.7 cu. ft.) of
aviators breathing oxygen (Specifications No.
MIL--O--27210). Recharging of this oxygen cylinder
should be accomplished by using the appropriate Pre-
cise Flight recharging fittings to the pressure shown in
Chapter 35.
12--20--00 -- SCHEDULED SERVICING
12--20--01 -- INDUCTION AIR FILTER
The importance of keeping the induction air filter (fig.
12--2) clean cannot be over--emphasized. A clean filter
promotes fuel economy and longer engine life.
Challenger Aviation Products
Re--charging instructions must be followed carefully for
maximum air filter life. Air filter must be recharged ev-
ery 100 hours or 12 months or sooner if operated in ex-
treme dusty conditions. Air filter assembly must be re-
placed after 25 cleanings or sooner if any deterioration
