TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE (CONTINUED)
TABLE 3 - TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE – SCANNING & READING PROBLEMS
SYMPTOMS
POSSIBLE CAUSE(S)
SOLUTION
Unit scans, communicates and
beeps twice.
1 – Same symbol timeout set too
short.
1 – Adjust same symbol timeout for a longer time.
The unit powers up, but does
not scan and/or beep.
1 – Beeper disabled. No tone
selected.
2 – Scanning a particular symbology
that is not enabled
3 – The scanner has been
programmed for a character
length lock, or a minimum length
and bar code being scanned does
not satisfy the programmed
criteria.
4 – Bad beeper.
5 – Bad decode board.
1 – Enable beeper. Select tone.
2 – UPC/EAN, Code 39, interleaved 2 of 5; code 93,
Code 128 and Codabar are enabled by default.
Verify that the type of bar code being read has been
selected.
3 – Verify that the bar code that is being scanned falls
into the criteria. (Typical of Non-UPC/EAN codes.)
(
The scanner defaults to a minimum of r character
bar code)
4 – Replace defective beeper.
5 – Replace defective decode board.
The unit scans a bar code, but
locks up after the first scan
(red LED stays on).
1 – The scanner is configured to
support some form of host
handshaking but is not receiving
the signal.
1 – If the scanner is setup to support ACK/NAK,
TRS/CTS, XON/XOFF or D/E, verify that the host
cable and host are supporting the handshaking
properly.
The unit scans, but the data
transmitted to the host is
incorrect.
1 – The scanner’s data format does
not match the host system
requirements.
1 – Verify that the scanner’s data format matches that
required by the host. Make sure that the scanner is
connected to the proper host port.
Scanner beeps at some bar
codes and NOT for others of
the same bar code symbology.
1 – The print quality of the bar code
is suspect.
2 – The aspect ratio of the bar code
is out of tolerance.
3 – The bar code may have been
printed incorrectly.
4 – The scanner is not configured
correctly for this type of bar
code.
5 – The minimum symbol length
setting does not work with the
bar code.
1 – Check print mode. The type of printer could be the
problem. Change print settings. For example change
to econo mode or high speed.
2 – Check print mode. The type of printer could be the
problem. Change print settings, i.e. change to econo
mode or high speed.
3 – Check if it is a check digit, character, or border
problem.
4 – Check if check digits are set properly.
5 – Check if the correct minimum symbol length is set.
Units ability to read barcodes
is poor.
1 – Dirty, damaged or distorted
optics.
2 – Low VLD output power (below
550uw).
3 – Low VLD output power (below
200uw).
4 – Poor VLD alignment.
1 – Clean and/or replace damaged mirrors/window.
2 – Decrease VLD SBT resistor by 10% of it’s current
value.
3 – Replace VLD.
4 – Replace Optics Module.
