Starting and Turning off the Engine
Hot Engine
Turn key in steering lock clockw ise to
the stop and start engine immediately
w ithout depressing the accelerator.
Release the key as soon as the
engine is firing regularly.
Turning off
Turn key in steering lock to position
“ 0 ” and remove only when the vehicle
has stopped.
Should the engine continue to o p e r­
ate with the key in steering lock
position “ 0 ” , refer to page 63.
W ith very high coolant tem peratures
(e.g. after driving on mountain
passes), do not shut dow n the engine
im m ediately but allow it to run at
slightly increased idle speed for
another 1 — 2 m inutes approximately.
Notes
Due to the installed sta rte r non-re-
peat unit, the key in the steering lock
m ust be returned to “ 0 " position
before making a new starting attem pt.
Observe the oil pressure gauge
immediately after starting. In a very
cold engine the oil pressure will only
rise slowly, some time after the
engine has started. Do not speed up
the engine before pressure is regis­
tered on the pressure gauge.
The charge indicator lamp must go
o u t as soon as the engine has started
If the preglow indicator fails to light
up, the preglow system is defec­
tive and should be repaired at a
MERCEDES-BENZ service station at
the earliest possible date.
In areas where tem peratures fre ­
quently drop below - 1 8 ° C/0° F, we
recom m end that a block heater is
installed. Every MERCEDES-BENZ
service station will advise you on this
subject.
