Emergency operation of the main engine
•
Stop the engine
•
Remove the air filter silencer
Shut down the turbocharger (block the rotor), see manufacturer´s instructions
Note:
If blocking is not possible:
-
disassemble the rotor.
-
obturate the exhaust gas side against bearing housing and air side by means of a
blind flange.
•
Interrupt the oil supply to the turbocharger, for this:
-
unscrew the connection of the pipe at the engine and close the connector with a plug an
union nut.
-
Plug and fasten the free end of the pipe.
Note:
The cooling water supply is to be interrupted only in case there is a considerable
leakage at the turbine housing on gas side, which would endanger the engine.
Note:
If there are two turbochargers feeding into one charge air manifold:
-
Close the air outlet casing of the turbocharger taken out of service with a blanking
cover.
•
Start the engine and reduce the output. If the installation is for heavy fuel, we recommend the
change to distillate fuel in emergency operation.
Fixed propellers
Start the engine with a
P
me
≈
5 bar abt. 20 % nominal power
CP propellers
The load conditions, as for a fixed propeller installation, should be reached by reducing the
propeller pitch and engine speed. Operation at rated speed is practically impossible, because the
engine output that can be reached, is generally lower than the propeller input at zero pitch.
Multi-engine plants with one propeller
The propellers are generally of the variable pitch type. Declutch the engine with the defective
turbocharger. Set the propeller pitch, so that the engine remaining in service can be run at rated
speed and continuous power. It is not necessary and impossible without equipment, for unbalanced
engine loads to run the defective engine at reduced output to increase the total power available. The
expenditure and the gain in power would not justify this.
