1.
Drain the water heater. Refer to
Section 14.3: DRAINING WATER HEATER SYSTEM
.

Ensure the flue is adequately supported. Remove the flue hood assembly

The retaining plug for the upper anode should be visible from above the appliance.
4.
Remove the anode (Item A in
Figure 14.2
)
and check its condition.
NOTE: If the anode has reduced in size by more than 40% at any point along its length or if it is severely
pitted, a new anode should be fitted. Particular attention should be paid to the ends of each
anode to ensure excessive localised depletion has not occurred. Where the anode is covered
with particles it should be cleaned.
5.
Locate the cleanout opening and remove outer cover and then the internal plate
6.
The lower anode (Item B in
Figure 14.2
)
is located on the rear of the internal plate, inspect condition of
the lower anode.
7.
The reassembly procedure is the reverse of removal, ensuring a water tight joint is achieved on the
cleanout cover.
