network), the DMZ (demilitarized zone). It is through these physical connections
that the Internet device is connected to your network and/ or your xDSL, cable or
wireless modem.
Internet
The global, decentralized network connecting computers. Many of these
computers are connected 24 hours a day to provide services such as web sites,
retail stores, databases of information, email services and more. Individuals can
access the Internet through an Internet Service Provider (Internet Service
Provider).
Internet Service Provider
Internet Service Providers are the companies that manage your Internet
connection. Frequently they will have a local phone number for you to call with
your modem which will give you access to the whole Internet, email and other
services they may offer.
IP Address
A 32–bit number broken up into 4 octets and used to identify a computer on a
TCP/IP network. This address takes the form of x.x.x.x where each x is an octet (a
number from 0–255). It is these addresses that identifies computers and web sites
on the Internet as well.
IP Header
The section of a data packet that is reserved for identifying information. Such
information could be the source IP address, the destination IP address, and other
information describing the type of data that the data packet carries. For examples
of different headers please see below.
