Troubleshooting
Where to start troubleshooting
Problems often arise with systems that can easily be avoided.
Before you begin troubleshooting, check the following:
Faulty or loose cables:
Make sure all cables are correctly in-
serted in their sockets. If the cables appear to be ok, try changing
cables with a cable you know is working to isolate faulty cables.
Non-standard cables:
Use a new correctly-wired cable for all
connections. Refer to
Cables and connectors
on page 29 of Ap-
pendix C.
Incorrect connections:
When connecting to other switches or
hubs, make sure you are using the correct cable type—crossover
or straight-through. Refer to
Cables and connectors
on page 29
of Appendix C.
Incorrect network topology:
Topology problems can arise from
excessive cable length, or excessive repeater delays between end
nodes. If a topology problem occurs after a recent change to your
network, change back to the previous topology to isolate the prob-
lem.
