Replacing a fan assembly
This section provides instructions on how to replace a fan assembly. Some models
will have three fans. See “Internal components” on page 92.
1. Open the computer cover. See “Opening the cover” on page 94.
2. If necessary, remove the adapter cards to access the failing fan. See “Accessing
system board components and drives” on page 96.
3. Note the routing of the fan-assembly wiring. See “System board connectors
and components” on page 93. Disconnect the fan-assembly-wiring connector
from the system board.
4. If you are replacing the front fan, remove the front bezel. See “Removing the
front bezel” on page 95.

If you are replacing the hard disk drive fan, remove the fan bracket that holds
the fan by using your fingers to release the fan bracket and then slide it
outward
6. For all fans, remove the fan assembly by pulling the fan grommets

free of
the bracket as shown.
7. Install the new fan assembly, route the wiring, and then connect the
fan-wiring connector to the system board. See “System board connectors and
components” on page 93.
8. Reinstall any adapters that were removed. See “Replacing an adapter card” on
page 103.
9. Reinstall the front bezel if it was removed. See “Removing the front bezel” on
page 95.
