HFS
The file system used by the Macintosh operating system to organize data on hard and floppy
disks. HFS can also be used for CD-ROMs.
Hybrid
The most common use of the term "hybrid" in the context of CD media refers to a CD
containing both Windows and Macintosh software, which on a Windows platform is seen as a
normal ISO 9660 CD, while on a Macintosh it appears as an HFS CD.
ISO 9660
The most common international standard for the logical format for files and directories on a
CD-ROM. Some other common logical formats such as Joliet and Rock Ridge are extensions
of ISO 9660.
KB (Kilobyte)
Basically, this means 1000 bytes, but it is actually 1024 bytes.
KB /s
Kilobytes per second. A means of measuring throughput.
Lead In--Lead Out
These are lengths of track before the beginning and after the end of the coding of a CD track.
In single- session applications, where they serve as 'markers', the lead-in provides
information such as the Table of Contents. The lead-out may include a special code to stop
the CD player. CD-Audio tracks (songs) use lead-in and lead-out to help song selection.
MB (Megabyte)
Basically means one million bytes, but is actually 1024 kilobytes or 1024 x 1024 bytes, which
equals 1,048,576 bytes.
MB /s
Megabytes per second. A means of measuring throughput.
Medium
Physical material, such as paper, disk or tape used to store computer data.
Mixed Mode Disc
A Mixed Mode CD is a CD that contains CD-Digital Audio and CD-ROM tracks. Usually, the
CD-ROM data is recorded in the first track. The audio portion of the CD uses the remaining
tracks (up to 98 ).
Session
A recorded segment of a CD that may contain one or more tracks of any type (data or audio).
In data recording, there is usually only one track per session. In audio recording, all audio
tracks are contained in a single session. A lead-in and lead-out are recorded for every
session on a CD.
Storage
In computers, any equipment on/in which information may be kept. PCs generally use disk
units and other external storage media (diskettes, CD-ROMs, magnetic disks, etc.) for
permanent storage of information.
