General
This Test Set is a battery-powered heterodyne type receiver,
tunable in the ultrasonic range of 30 to 45 kHz, producing an
output in the audible range. It is intended primarily for use as a
hand-held, self-contained Test Set designed to be used in
connection with the installation and maintenance of Underwater
Acoustic Beacons. By utilizing the self-contained microphone
and loudspeaker, the Test Set can perform an operational test on
a beacon without removing the beacon from its mount on the
aircraft.
Several optional modes of operation are possible through the
use of external pickup devices fed into the accessory INPUT
jack. For example, attachment of any hydrophone of suitable
frequency range to the BNC input permits use of the Test Set
as a field demonstration and training device with a beacon up
to 1000 yards away in the water.

Beacon Operational Tests
D
Set TUNING control between 35 and 40 kHz. Turn GAIN
control clockwise and check for operation by jingling keys
or coins near microphone.
D
Short water switch on Beacon. Tune Test Set for best
audible signal.
D
Beacon operation will be indicated by a pulsing, audible
tone.
D
Determine pulse repetition rate by counting pulses for 10
seconds. If 5 or more are counted, the beacon should
operate according to published specifications.
D
The Test Set can detect a beacon signal over an
unobstructed distance of approximately 40 feet with the
GAIN control wide open. This is an indication of normal
operation of both components.
D
The 42A12 Series Test Set is not intended to measure
actual output signal level; therefore, does not require
periodic calibration.
Battery Life and Replacement
With intermittent usage, battery operating life will be in the 30- to
40-hour range, depending upon the type and manufacturer of the
battery. Any 9-volt transistor battery may be used, but longer and
more reliable service will be obtained by the use of premium
batteries such as NEDA Type 1604A. The battery is accessible
by removing the screw on the bottom of the case and dropping
the chassis free of the case. Snap-type connectors facilitate
change of the battery and prevent reversal of polarity.
We reserve the right to change the design and specification of goods supplied, without
notice, to incorporate improvements in design and manufacturing techniques.
