Chapter 2
CUP2 Printed Circuit Boards
Function Overview
The CUP2 contains four printed circuit boards (PCB); the Engine, the Interface, the Audio, and
the ControlPanel. To greatly generalize:
The Engine PCB contains everything concerning sample playback, audio effects, and the
functions of the CUP2 operating system.
The Interface PCB helps the Engine PCB communicate with the Control Panel PCB, the volume
control potentiometer, Audio PCB, keyboard, and rear panel connectors.
The Audio PCB contains the system power supply, audio power ampli  ers, and crossover for
the CUP2's four speakers.
The Control Panel PCB contains the LED display and buttons to control functions of the
instrument.
Engine PCB
Function Summary
The CUP2 Engine PCB performs the following functions:
1. CPU for the entire system
2. Synthesis and effects for all of the sounds
3. Sample ROM
4. D-to-A converter for the synthesizer
5. Non-volatile storage of all user data
6. Scanner for control panel buttons, LEDs, knobs, and the keyboard
7. USB controller
8. MIDI interface, both 5-pin and USB
9. The following function summary descriptions reference the RP2A Engine PCB, Rev D
Ver 2A, schematic circuit drawings (Chapter 7, pages 7-3 through 7-7).
