EFI Fuel System
2. A completely dry system may require repeating
step 1 several times. Wait a minimum of 10
seconds between key OFF and key ON.
Fuel Recommendations
General Recommendations
Purchase gasoline in small quantities and store in
clean, approved containers. An approved container
with a capacity of 2 gallons or less with a pouring
spout is recommended. Such a container is easier to
handle and helps prevent spillage during refueling.
• Do not use gasoline le
ft
over from the previous
season, to minimize gum deposits in your fuel
system, and to ensure easy starting.
• Do not add oil to the gasoline.
• Do not over
fi
ll the fuel tank. Leave room for the
fuel to expand.
Fuel Type
For best results use only clean, fresh,
unleaded
gasoline with a pump sticker octane rating of 87
(R+M)/2 or higher. In countries using the Research
Octane Number (RON), it should be 90 octane
minimum. Leaded gasoline is not recommended and
must not be used on EFI engines or on other models
where exhaust emissions are regulated.
Gasoline/Alcohol Blends
Gasohol (up to 10% ethyl alcohol, 90% unleaded
gasoline by volume) is approved as a fuel for Kohler
engines. Other gasoline/alcohol blends including E20
and E85 are not to be used and not approved. Any
failures resulting from use of these fuels will not be
warranted.
Gasoline/Ether Blends
Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) and unleaded
gasoline blends (up to a maximum of 15% MTBE by
volume) are approved as a fuel for Kohler engines.
Other gasoline/ether blends are not approved.
The EFI fuel system remains under high pressure even
when the engine is stopped. Before a
tt
empting to service
any part of the fuel system, the pressure must be relieved
by following Fuel Pump Module Fuel Connector Removal
instructions below.
Fuel Pump Module Fuel Connector
Removal
Wrap a shop towel completely around the fuel pump
module connector. Press the release bu
tt
on(s) and
slowly pull the connector away from the fuel pump
module allowing the shop towel to absorb any
residual fuel in the high pressure fuel line. Any spilled
fuel must be completely wiped up immediately.
Initial Starting/Priming Procedure
Important: The EFI fuel system must be purged of air
(primed) prior to the initial start up, and/or any time
the system has been disassembled or the fuel tank run
dry.
1. Turn the key switch to the ON/RUN position. You
will hear the fuel pump cycle on and o
ff
. When
the fuel pump stops cycling (approximately 20
seconds), the system is primed; start the engine.
Description
WARNING
Explosive Fuel!
Explosive Fuel can cause
fi
res
and severe burns.
Do not
fi
ll the fuel tank while the
engine is hot or running.
Gasoline is extremely
fl
ammable and its vapors can explode if
ignited. Store gasoline only in approved containers, in well
ventilated, unoccupied buildings, away from sparks or
fl
ames.
Do not
fi
ll the fuel tank while the engine is hot or running,
since spilled fuel could ignite if it comes in contact with hot
parts or sparks from ignition. Do not start the engine near
spilled fuel. Never use gasoline as a cleaning agent.
WARNING
Explosive Fuel can cause
fi
res and
severe burns.
Fuel systems ALWAYS remains under
HIGH PRESSURE.
Fuel Fire and Burns!
Wrap a shop towel completely around the fuel pump module
connector. Press the release bu
tt
on(s) and slowly pull the
connector away from the fuel pump module allowing the shop
towel to absorb any residual fuel in the high pressure fuel line.
Any spilled fuel must be completely wiped up immediately.
