DISTRESS CALL
Terminating Transmission of a Distress
Call
CAUTION
If a false distress call is accidentally transmitted, terminate transmission
immediately. Even though
STOP
was pressed, the distress message has
already been transmitted. Use CH16 to inform local shipping and rescue
operations that the transmission was false.
OPERATION

Transmission is terminated and the CH16 Status
Display appears.
WARNING
Receiving a Distress Call
When a distress call is received, the DISTRESS & URGENCY LED lights up and alarm sounds. Up to 20
received distress calls are automatically stored in the memory for future reference. When a printer is
connected, the distress call is automatically printed out.
When a distress call is received, be sure to inform the ship’s captain or officer in
charge.
This affects the life of the crew and passengers on the ship in distress.
TIP
• A distress call has priority over all other operations.
• The distress message is first transmitted 5 times consecutively, followed by random intervals of 3.5 to
4.5 minutes thereafter. This process is repeated until a response is received.
• When a navigation system is connected, position and time data from the system is automatically
added to the distress massage.
• When no navigation aid is connected, the position and time data is transmitted as dummy data.
• When a printer is connected, the distress message is automatically printed out.
• Standby reception is carried out on CH16 during 3.5 min. to 4.5 min. pause between distress calls.
The DSC CH70 answer is received on the DSC Watchkeeping Receiver.
