Thermal Grease
The thermal grease must be replaced any time the heat sink has been removed from the top of
the microprocessor and is going to be reused, or when debris is found in the grease.
✏
NOTE
When using an existing heat sink to upgrade or replace microprocessors, you must first
remove all old thermal grease before applying new grease. Refer to the Intel
®
Enterprise
Blade Server Family Component Enabling Specification for information on how to order
thermal grease.
Complete the following steps to replace thermal grease:
a.
Place the heat sink on a clean work surface.
b.
Wipe all thermal grease from the bottom of the heat sink.
c.
Using the thermal grease syringe, dispense the entire 0.02 mL (0.5 gram) of thermal grease
to the center of the microprocessor.
✏
NOTE
Do not touch the thermal grease on the microprocessor. Touching the thermal grease will
contaminate it.
11.
Install the heat sink on the microprocessor:
a.
Align and place the heat sink (A) on top of the microprocessor. Press firmly on the heat sink.
b.
Lower the retention mechanism (B) over the heat sink and tighten down the captive
mounting screw (C). Some downward pressure will be required to tighten the screw. Do not
over-tighten the screw.
