3 Installing options
This chapter provides instructions for adding options to your blade server. Some option-removal
instructions are provided in case you need to remove one option to install another.
Installation guidelines
Before you begin to install options in your blade server, read the following information:
•
Read the safety information beginning on page vi and the guidelines in “Handling electrostatic
discharge-sensitive devices” on page vii. This information will help you work safely with your
blade server and options.
•
Back up all important data before you make changes to disk drives.
•
Before you remove a hot-swap blade server from the system chassis, you must shut down the
operating system and turn off the blade server. You do not have to shut down the system chassis
itself.
•
Ensure that you have a Phillips* screwdriver (#3) on hand prior to beginning any installation
procedure.
System reliability considerations
To help ensure proper cooling and system reliability:
•
Make sure that all microprocessor sockets always contain either a microprocessor heat sink filler
or a microprocessor and heat sink.
•
Make sure that the clear plastic air baffle is properly installed over the retention mechanism
assembly.
