Programming the HandPunch
38
Some right hands cannot be used in the HandPunch due to disabilities such as missing
fingers. You can enroll a user with the left hand facing palm side up. The techniques for
left hand enrollment are the same as for standard enrollment. The user should keep the
back of the hand flat against the platen and move the fingers against the web pin and
the finger pins in the same manner as in standard enrollment. Users enrolled with the
left hand must always verify with the left hand. Extra practice on placing the hand on the
platen may be required to ensure correct, consistent hand reads.
When a user uses the HandPunch the display appears as follows.
OKAY (USER ID)
SCORE IS: (SCORE NUMBER)
The score number on the display reflects how accurately the user’s hand is placed on
the platen. Scores that vary greatly between low and high numbers are indicative of
inconsistent hand placement. Scores above 50 are indicative of improper hand placement
or of a drastic change in the physical appearance of the hand.
When this occurs, emphasize the importance of sliding the hand onto the platen and
keeping the hand flat. Re-training and practice should lower a user’s score. It might
be necessary to change a user’s reject threshold if the user has a mild disability. Re-
enrollment might be necessary to create a new user template.
