Chapter 4. Configuring Your Macintosh Network

Chapter 4.  Configuring Your Macintosh Network

This chapter discusses the tasks involved in configuring your Macintosh
network for the IBM Network Color Printer. The configuration tasks you will
perform to make the printer an effective part of your network printing
environment are:

1. Configure your printer so that:

– The AppleTalk communication protocol is enabled. Enabling the

AppleTalk communication protocol allows all Macintosh computers on
the network to print directly to the printer.

– The Print queue is enabled. Enabling the Print queue enables

Macintosh computers to submit jobs to the printer. The Print queue
immediately receives the jobs, freeing the Macintosh to do other
things. The printer stores the jobs on its hard disk and prints them in
the order in which it receives them.

If users will print jobs that should not be stored on the printer’s hard
disk for security reasons, then also enable the Direct queue. A job
submitted to the Direct queue waits on the submitting Macintosh until
the Direct queue is free and ready to receive it. This may take a long
time, especially if the Direct queue is also receiving jobs from a Novell
or NT network print server. When the Direct queue does receive the
job, the printer prints the job immediately, without first writing it to disk.

To configure the printer, see “Configuring the IBM Network Color Printer”
on page 6–1.

2. Optionally, you can use your Macintosh computer to share the

Customer CD-ROM with other Macintosh computers. By sharing the
Customer CD-ROM over the network, you enable other Macintosh
users to install the end-user software without possessing CD-ROM
drives and without having to physically have the

Customer CD-ROM.

You will find instructions on sharing the

Customer CD-ROM in

“Configuring Your Macintosh for Sharing Files” on page 4–2.

3. Install the end-user software from the

Customer CD-ROM or diskette

on your Macintosh computer. The end-user software includes the
PostScript Level 2 Printer Driver, printer description files, and other
items that you need in order to take advantage of all the features of the
printer.

Installing the software is an end-user task and is documented in the
User’s Guide. When you are done with configuring the printer and
sharing the CD-ROM, see the

User’s Guide.
