Chapter 4. Installing
This section covers topics on how to rack, stack, unpack, and install an ESS 3000 system. It also guides
the customer on how to fill out the installation worksheet.
The SSR can refer to the “Elastic Storage System 3000 installation (SSR task)” on page 51 topic to
perform a hardware checkout and set the management interface IP.
Note: Much of the information in this section is intended only for IBM authorized service providers.
Customers need to consult the terms of their warranty to determine the extent to which they should
attempt any IBM
®
Elastic Storage System maintenance.
Tasks to be done by the Customers or an IBM service support representatives (SSR) have been
marked accordingly in this chapter.
Installation overview
The installation and initial configuration of your system is carried out by an IBM Service Support
Representative (SSR), following the plan that you provide to them.
Network switch VLAN instructions
For information on setting up the management switch, see the Switch VLAN configuration instructions.
Note: An IBM intranet connection is required.
Hardware installation tasks performed by an IBM SSR
Note: For new ESS customers, an EMS node is required and connections must be made from C10-T1 and
C10-T2 to the management network VLAN. For an existing ESS customer, the SSR must add the new
connection from C10-T2 to the management network VLAN. For more information on port locations, see
“Installation worksheet” on page 63.
To install the Elastic Storage System 3000 hardware, an IBM SSR must complete the following tasks:
Important: You must complete the planning tasks and provide completed worksheets to the IBM SSR
before they can proceed with installing and initializing your system.
1. An IBM SSR unpacks and installs the 5141- AF8 system in the rack.
2. Referring to the worksheets that the customer provided, the IBM SSR completes the cabling.
Initial setup tasks performed by an IBM SSR
After the hardware is installed, an IBM SSR connects a workstation to a 5141-AF8 system (including EMS)
SSR access port and completes the following tasks (as the essserv1 user using the essutils tool ):
1. Perform SSR tasks listed in the SSR panel within the essutils tool.
2. Configure IP address of the management port.
For more information on port locations, see “Installation worksheet” on page 63.
For information on how to update the software level, see the Quick Deployment Guide in the IBM Elastic
Storage System (ESS) 3000 Knowledge Center.
