– This switch is not required to be in place for the SSR to start but it must be ready before the customer
begins the cluster setup.
– The SSR is not responsible for this switch. If the switch is already racked and cabled, the SSR will
plug-in to the adapters.
– A 40G Ethernet switch may also be used with the proper connectors.
Supported connectors per network type:
– EDR cables: QSFP28
– 100G cables: QFSP28 (but different from the EDR cables)
– 40G cables: QSFP+
Note: It is recommended to use IBM branded connectors, especially for the adapter side. When using
your own switch, ensure that the connectors are compatible with the switch.
• Ethernet cables (2) run from the 1 Gb or 10 Gb management switch to the EMS as shown in the Figure
37 on page 65 .
– Slot C10, Port T2 - Canister network
– Slot C10, Port T1 - EMS management / xCAT network
– Neither interface has a default IP. The EMS management interface (T1) is set up by the SSR.
• Ethernet cables (2) run from the 1GbE or 10GbE management switch to the ESS 3000 units (1 per
server canister to Ethernet port 1).
– Plug the cable and set the IP address based on the customer specification.
Power
• All the switches has power applied.
• The EMS node has power applied but in a standby state (blinking light).
• Canisters have power cables inserted, which will automatically boot the operating system.
High-Speed Network
• If available at the time of installation, the SSR can plug in the high-speed cables on the node side.
Otherwise, this is the responsibility of the customer.
The customer should have a laptop with PuTTY installed. The laptop should be able to connect to the
RJ45 Ethernet cable using an Ethernet port or an USB to Ethernet dongle.
• An Ethernet cable is required to connect to the EMS and ESS 3000 units.
The SSR must access each server to run hardware and software health checks and set the management
IP interface.
Elastic Storage System 3000 installation (SSR task)
This document is intended to be used by the SSR at the customer site to complete installation. The
document is for new customers of Elastic Storage System 3000 only (EMS + one or more ESS 3000 units).
Note: When you run the Validate Install parameters step under the SSR tasks, note that you can safely
ignore any GNR or spectrum scale errors. If you see a red failure at the bottom of the screen, ignore only if
the corresponding errors in the output were related to Spectrum Scale or GNR only.
Following are the steps to be done by the SSR at the customer site:
1. Review the installation worksheet filled by the customer to ensure that the following details are
provided:
• EMS management interface IP and netmask
• Canister 1 (top) management interface IP and netmask
• Canister 2 (bottom) management interface IP and netmask
