Chapter 3. Installation

This chapter describes how to physically install the c-series switches.
Information about configuring IP addresses and connecting network devices is in
the section “Configuring IP addresses” on page 24.
Attention: Before starting any installation or maintenance procedure, refer to
“Safety notices” on page xi.
Unpacking a system
The systems ship with the following items. Please review the list below and verify
the contents. If any items are missing, please contact the place of purchase.
Package contents
v IBM Ethernet Switch B48C or B50C device with 1x AC power supply
v CD-ROM containing software images and the user documentation (including this
guide)
v Adjustable rack mounting ears
v 6’ straight-through EIA/TIA DB-9 serial console cable
v
Grounding lug
General requirements
To manage the system, you need the following items for serial connection to the
router:
v A management station, such as a PC running a terminal emulation application.
v A straight-through EIA/TIA DB-9 serial cable (F/F).
You use the serial connection to perform basic configuration tasks including
assigning an IP address and network mask to the system. This information is
required for managing the system using the Web management interface or using
the CLI through Telnet.
Attention: Do not use the handles on the power supply units to lift or carry the
device.
