Finding the IP address for an iLO on system blades
Finding the IP address for an iLO on system blades
System blades contain an iLO processor. However, not all system blades have a local keyboard, video, and mouse solution to help identify
the IP address assigned to the iLO. Running a simple DHCP server on your laptop, connected directly to the management (iLO) port on
your chassis allows you to temporarily assign an IP address to the management device. The DHCP server enables you to connect to your
laptop, obtain the MAC address, and/or configure a static IP before reconnecting the laptop to your proper management network.
System blades have an identification tag that provides the following information:
The Dynamic DNS name that the iLO will use: If your network supports dynamic DNS, you can access the iLO by entering the dynamic
DNS name into your browser.
The MAC address of the network interface of the iLO: If you have access to the DHCP server lease or log files, you can locate the MAC
address of your iLO in the files.
If you do not have access to the leases or log files from your DHCP server, and your network does not support Dynamic DNS, you can use
a network scanning application (NMAP) to help identify the IP address.
By default, the iLO attempts to obtain an IP address through DHCP. However, if your network does not support DHCP, or none of the
methods described earlier lets you identify the address assigned to your iLO, you can try configuring a static IP address for ongoing
management. To configure a static address, you must temporarily provide a DHCP server to access the management interface.
