bac k up
T o \bac k up the le system" refers to the pro cess of cop ying the le system
to a separate disk or to a tap e.
bitmap
Generally sp eaking, an arra y of data bits used for graphic images. Strictly
sp eaking, a pixmap of depth one (capable of represen ting 2-color images).

T o start up y our system, loading it in to the computer memory .
b o ot ROM
A read-only memory whic h is incorp orated in to a terminal for the purp ose
of starting the op erating system, testing the terminal, and pro ducing a
standard display .
buer
An area used for temp orary storage.
button
A graphic con trol that simulates a real-life push button. Use the p ointer
and mouse to \push" the button and immediately start an action. Radio
buttons come in sets of t w o or more. Eac h button represen ts a m utually
exclusiv e selection. Radio buttons are t ypically used for setting states or
mo des.
b yte
A fundamen tal c haracter-co de unit, usually consisting of 8 or 16 bits.
CD ROM
Compact Disc Read-Only Memory .
c haracter
An elemen t used for the organization, con trol, or represen tation of text.
Characters include graphic c haracters and con trol c haracters.
clic k
T o press and r ele ase a mouse button. The term comes from the fact that
pressing and releasing the buttons of most mice makes a clic king sound.
