5.7 High Pressure Pump Stuffing
Box Packing Replacement
The packing creates the seal at the ultra high pres-
sure pump plungers in the stuffing boxes. When
excessive water begins flowing through a stuffing
box, the packing will need to be replaced.
Typical Packing Replacement
The procedure in this section is for packing that
is worn and leaking excessively, but is not stuck.
Use the following procedure to replace the
packing:
1. Identify the stuffing box with the worn or dam -
aged packing.
2. Turn off the 40K clutch, charge water pump
and the waterblasting system. Then place the
truck in the service position.
3. Rotate the high pressure pump drive pulley to
move the pony rod all the way back against
the power frame at the crank shaft end of the
pump. This will provide the clearance required
to remove the gland nut and plunger.

4. Use the 7/8” Allen wrench (Jetstream tool)
supplied in the waterblasting tool system.
Insert the round end wrench into the hole on
the gland nut. Use a 2 lb hammer to hit the
Jetstream tool in a counterclockwise direction
to loosen the gland nut.
5. Use a ratchet wrench with a 9/16” socket to
remove the brass plunger coupling bolts and
nuts.
6. Remove the gland nut, plunger and packing
assembly. If the packing will not come out,
refer to the stuck packing removal procedure
in this chapter.
7. Remove the old packing from the plunger. Then
clean debris out of the stuffing box and the
lubrication holes in the gland nut.
8. Check the carbide guide bushing for nicks,
cracks, breaks or excessive wear. Replace if
necessary.
