Heat Exchanger Cleaning
Cleaning of the heat exchanger promotes efficient heat transfer.
Recommended cleaning frequency ranges between annually and
quarterly, depending on usage profile and firewood quality.
The cleaning procedure requires removal of the Frontier CX top panel,
top insulation, heat exchanger lid and turbulator. The heat exchanger is
then brushed and vacuumed. Before you start, all fire and coals in the
firebox should be extinguished and cooled.
1.
Remove the
top panel
of the Frontier CX. Use a 5/16” socket
wrench to remove the self-tapping screws and lift off the cover to
expose the insulation.
2.
Lift up and drape the
data cable
that to the front panel panel
PCB over the side panel so it is not in the way during the cleaning
process.
3.
Remove the
two layers of insulation
over the heat exchanger
lid. Rolling each layer of insulation individually makes it easy to handle
and lift out of the unit.
4.
Remove the
Heat Exchanger Lid
by using a ¾” wrench to
remove the lid nuts. Lift off the lid using the lid handles. Inspect the
heat exchanger rope gasket for wear. Contact your dealer to replace the
gasket if it appears worn.
5.
Remove the
insulation board
from the front top of the heat
exchanger. Inspect the board for deterioration and replace as necessary.
(Note: complete inspection of the heat exchanger requires knowledge
which you dealer has obtained through Greenwood Clean Energy
certification.)
6.
Remove the
turbulator
. Holding the ends or sides of the
turbulator lift it straight up and leave it setting on top of the heat
exchanger.
7.
Brush and vacuum the turbulator and then set it aside.
8.
Brush and vacuum the heat exchanger, the rear area of the
plenum, and the visible area of the fan housing.
CAUTION
. The base
below the heat exchanger is ceramic material and should not be
subjected to striking or heavy pressure from the cleaning tools or
vacuum nozzle.
9.
Replace components in the reverse order of disassembly.
Inspect to confirm that there are no gaps between the heat exchanger lid
insulation and the rest of the plenum top insulation to which it overlaps
or abuts.
Required tools:
5/16” socket wrench
¾” wrench

Vacuum with thin nozzle
